More than 200 schools took part in the November 2012 Honor a Veteran Program sponsored by the Secretary of State’s office. Schools across Nebraska are encouraged to host an event that honors local veterans in their community.
There are templates available on the Secretary of State’s website for hosting a program, as well information on how to find an available speaker.
Irving Middle School in Lincoln hosted their event on November 9, 2012. As part of the program, students watched a video on the North Platte Canteen. Veterans, seated on the stage, introduced themselves. Secretary Gale delivered the address and urged students to “do the best that they could in school” as a way to honor military veterans. Some students came to the program dressed in patriotic clothes. Richard Snokes read his winning essay, “What Would I Tell the Founding Fathers”. Afterward, students hosted a reception for those in attendance.
