Secretary Gale presents certificates to Girls State participants

June 4, 2015

Sec. Gale paid a visit to the Robert B. Daugherty Water for Food Institute on July 15, 2015 where he met with Christopher Neale, Director of Research, and Molly Nance, Director of Communications and Public Relations.

Sec. Gale visited with student-candidates who ran for office during Cornhusker Girls State at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  This American Legion Auxiliary State program is designed to promote self-government, good citizenship, and thriving democracy.  The program has grown since its creation in the 1930s, and now roughly 25,000 young women participate in Girls State programs across the nation each summer.

At Cornhusker Girls State, the students are divided into miniature cities, which they then must govern according to state rules and procedures.  Mock elections are held to fill various city, county, and state seats.  These mock elections provide a stage for the women to engage in campaigning, rallies, debates, and eventually, legislative sessions.
Congratulations to the winners and all those who participated!
