Flag Flying Procedures

Arrangements may be made with the Secretary of State’s Office to have U.S. or Nebraska flags flown atop the west wing of the State Capitol in recognition of individuals, accomplishments and special occasions. This is a complimentary service provided by the office.

Interested parties must arrange for a flag to be delivered to the office and provide information about why the flag is to be flown, for whom, the expected date of flight and contact information regarding the flag’s recipient. Flags flown over the Capitol are accompanied by a keepsake certificate signed by the Secretary of State detailing the date and purpose of the flight.

U.S and Nebraska flags may be purchased through two Lincoln vendors - Capital Corner Gift Shop (402-471-2062) or Flagworks (402-476-8017). Arrangements may be made through either vendor to have a flag delivered to the office for flight over the Capitol.  Flags obtained by other means are also acceptable.

Common reasons to request a flag flight include anniversaries of historic American events, military deployments, scouting achievements and birthdays.

To arrange for a flag to be flown over the Capitol or for more information about the service, contact the office at (402) 471-4070.
